ORGANIC MATTERS
The students that work with Cheryl Coon at the Academy of Art University’s Sculpture Department are committed artists who strive to create work with a strong conceptual focus and is supported by a fearless exploration of their materials.
“Organic Matters” features work by sculptors who use materials that embody, mimic, or appear to be aberrations of nature. Their work, though often fun to look at, is serious in its intent. The variety of their ideas and the richness of their textures reflect their growth as artists and their passion. Each work is a comment, often biting, of society’s myopic view of the natural world and its often duplicitous relationship to it.
The artist on show are: Cameron Bishop, Michael Braida, Cynthia Kuhn, Shelley Monahan, Alexandra Ostroff, Chrystal Powell, Ed Reilly, Dan Rojales, Dax Santi, Michael Steinmetz, Jennifer Surprise, David Swanson and Sydney Brown Tarman.
(Special thanks to Cheryl Coon for her help with this article.)

A WORD FROM KATHLEEN SALVIA,
SAC Director
I’ve been at the Art Center for two months now. I’ve met a lot of artists, feasted my eyes on great art, and been introduced to the Art Guild of Pacifica. The tremendous energy and effort the members of the AGP put into bringing art to the community inspires me.
Studying the history of the Center has taught me that without the volunteer work put in by AGP members, along with their absolutely steadfast dedication and loyalty, Sanchez Art Center would not exist. I thank you for giving the center life, and keeping it safe. I love it here and look forward to working together on the exciting new projects that will allow Sanchez Art Center to continue to “Create Community Through Art”.
And now, down to Brass Tacks...this is the part where I ask for your help. There are a few studio vacancies at the Center. We’ve been collecting applications and the Studio Screening Committee will convene soon to review those applications and select our next artist tenants. However, we need one more community member on the committee. I’m hoping one of you will be interested and contact me about assisting with the selection process. Other members include myself, Susan DeLora, and Charlotte Seekamp. The job will involve meeting for a couple hours, interviewing the prospective applicants, and voting on our final choices. We’re hoping to have only one meeting, but there is a chance we might need two. To volunteer for the Selection Committee, to put in your own application for a studio, or just to share your thoughts, please contact me via email(Kathleen@sanchezartcenter.org), or call me at 650.355.1984 on Tuesdays or Wednesdays.
